Blue Planet Berry Co.

We believe working with nature is important

We are farmers, who grow and pack fruit, our livelihood and future comes from the land, so we understand the importance of sustainability.

There is little to no industry interest in natural, sustainable packaging alternatives, that is why we have chosen to develop our own plant based packaging which is: sustainable, clear, mechanically & chemically recyclable and industrially compostable.

WE ARE LISTENING TO YOU

All around the world, fresh produce is placed into petrochemical (fossil fuel) plastic packaging which is not sustainable for our planet.

Using packaging made from plants to protect the fruit we grow feels right and more natural to us.

We understand the growing frustrations of petrochemical plastics on our environment.

There is very little choice for those who wish to have an alternative.

That is why we decided to act.

WORKING WITH NATURE – FRUIT PUNNETS FROM PLANTS

has searched the world to create a 100% plant based packaging solution which is clear so you can see our great quality fruit.

This material is known as poly lactic acid-PLA.

By working with nature, we all help reduce our carbon footprint.

RECYCLING

PLA can be put in the recycling bin because it can easily be identified and separated from the other plastics in recycling centres.

This is done by using the near-infra red (NIR) cameras which are already used to separate plastics from each other.

PLA also has the advantage of being able to be chemically recycled back into its virgin monomer units, making it particularly attractive as a recycled material in both quality and value.

COMPOSTING

Our PLA packaging can be industrially composted with food waste where it breaks down naturally into water, carbon dioxide and lactic acid.

Which can then be used as a nutrient rich compost in farmers fields.

GENERAL WASTE

Don’t worry if you accidentally put PLA packaging in the general waste.

Unlike other plastics, when PLA is burnt it produces NO noxious fumes.

If it is buried in landfill, it will eventually break down into water, carbon dioxide and lactic acid – so either way, if burnt or buried PLA is still better for the environment.

INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION

Anthesis, are one of the world’s largest specialist sustainability services and solutions consultancies, with acclaimed expertise in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and circular economy.

Anthesis independently reviewed and verified PLA as a sustainable packaging alternative to recycled rPET.

PLA has a lower comparative Carbon Footprint to rPET in each of the end of life scenarios evaluated. (Anthesis, 2019).

Our Journey

Developing this solution has been far from easy, but we at hope to inspire others to join us in exploring and developing sustainable plant based packaging that is kind to our planet.

Working with nature, together we achieve more.

DID YOU KNOW?

55% of all collected UK household plastic is either burnt or buried *(BBC, 2019)

Carbon Footprint

Net Carbon Footprint of PLA is lower than rPET in all end of life scenarios…

Did You Know?

The cost of every council in the UK having an industrial composting operation, would be a fraction of the cost of just one industrial incinerator?
